COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. It was first identified in late 2019 and led to a global pandemic. The virus primarily spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. Common symptoms include fever, cough, fatigue, loss of taste or smell, and difficulty breathing. While many people experience mild or moderate illness, some—especially older adults and those with underlying health conditions—can develop severe complications. Preventive measures include vaccination, wearing masks, hand hygiene, and physical distancing.
